Shaping European Strategic Autonomy: from Challenges to the way forward

Shaping European Strategic Autonomy: from Challenges to the way forward

Rome, 22 April 2026
Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI)
Via dei Montecatini, 17
9:30-13:30

The roundtable will offer an exchange of perspectives on current challenges and potential responses on European strategic autonomy. The discussion will focus in particular on the role of emerging digital and green technologies, as well as the enabling industrial and trade measures required within the strategic autonomy framework. In an increasingly evolving global context, plans for European strategic autonomy will need to develop immediate responses to the current impact of new technologies, remaining sufficiently flexible to adapt to ongoing and future transformations.
The first session will cover the issues of dependence on external suppliers and vulnerabilities in the supply of clean technologies, semiconductors, and critical raw materials, as well as asymmetries in the transatlantic relationship in security, technology and energy.
The second session will address proactive and protective measures to respond to the challenges highlighted, such as strategies to diversify supply and reduce dependencies, policy tools to strengthen domestic production capacity, and enhance the European Union’s competitiveness and economic security.
The roundtable brings together Italian and European stakeholders from both the private and public sectors, alongside experts from academia and think tanks, to discuss recent developments and future trends
